Cotton jersey shorts in black and red, carrying the New Balance name. There is nothing complicated about them, which is rather the point. Cotton behaves differently to the synthetics that dominate sportswear. It breathes well, it feels soft against the skin from the first wear rather than after a few washes, and it does not hold onto smells the way some synthetics do. The trade-off is honest enough: cotton takes on sweat and keeps hold of it, so these are happier in a weights session, a warm-up, a game of five-a-side in mild weather or an hour on the sofa afterwards than they are in a hot studio class. Two sizes are stocked, S and M, so this pair sits at the smaller end of the range. There is no L or XL here, which is worth knowing before you order rather than after. Care is mostly a question of shrinkage. Wash cool, because cotton jersey will tighten up if you run it hot, and keep the tumble dryer low or skip it altogether. Reshape the waist and hems while they are still damp, then dry them flat or on a line, and they will hold their length. Black and red is a forgiving pairing. It sits happily with almost anything else in a kit bag and it does not show much between washes, which matters more than it sounds when the shorts live in the bottom of one.
