The Empire is a divan in the proper sense of the word: a solid upholstered base that carries the mattress instead of a frame that wraps around it. There is no side rail to climb over, no footboard to catch a shin on and no surround adding width to the room, which makes it the sensible choice in a smaller bedroom, a guest room or a loft conversion where the walls close in.

Its footprint follows the standard UK mattress sizes, so the base sits under the mattress rather than around it and the bed takes up only the space it needs. That plainness is also an opportunity: upholstered to order in the fabric and colour you choose, an Empire can recede into a neutral scheme in a soft weave, or become a deliberate block of colour that the rest of the room is arranged around.
